Comedy on Film:  Time to Laugh

Screwball comedy, visual gags, slapstick, one-liners.  Let's give ourselves permission to laugh this autumn with our popular film series moderated by educator Victor Messick as we present a range of American comedy featuring classic films and selected film clips.

We lay the foundations of comedy film with "Some Like It Hot" (1959), #1 on many lists as the funniest comedy of all time. Considered by some film historians as a transitional film bridging classic screwball of the 1930’s and 40’s with modern era comedy starting in the 1960’s. Billy Wilder's comedy classic stars Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis & Marilyn Monroe:  After two male musicians witness a mob hit, they flee the state in an all-female band disguised as women, but further complications set in.
